How do I download a basemap for use offline in the mobile app?

Learn how to download an offline basemap layer in the mobile app

Introduction: Basemap satellite layers provide crucial context for navigation and sampling in the FarmLab mobile app. However, when operating offline, these layers are only cached for previously viewed areas. To address this challenge, the FarmLab app enables users to pre-download basemap layers onto their mobile devices, particularly for use in areas with limited or no connectivity.

  4. Navigate to Map Settings:

    • Within the settings menu, locate 'Map Settings'.
  5. Offline Maps:

    • Under 'Map Settings', choose 'Offline Maps'.
  6. Automatic Download (Optional):

    • If your farm has predefined boundaries, the app will automatically start downloading the basemap for that area. You can monitor the download progress from this screen.
  7. Select Your Own Map:

    • To download a specific area, select 'Select your own map' from the top of the screen.
  8. Define Download Area:

    • Zoom in or out on the map to identify the desired area for download. Note: The maximum area for download at once is approximately 2,000 hectares. However, you can download multiple maps if needed.
  9. Initiate Download:

    • After selecting your desired area, tap 'Download' to start the basemap download process.
  10. Clearing Downloaded Maps (Optional):

    • To free up storage space on your device, you can clear downloaded maps. Simply tap the 'clear maps' icon located at the top right corner of the Download Map screen.
  11. Download Progress:

    • Depending on the size of the selected area, the download process may take some time. The FarmLab servers will first process the imagery before downloading it to your device. You can monitor the download progress and leave the screen at any time. Note: Download time can vary between 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of the area being downloaded.
  12. Resume Sampling:

    • Once the download is complete, you can proceed with your sampling activities. When operating offline or in areas with limited connectivity, the downloaded basemap layer will be visible in the background, along with sample points and farm boundaries.

Conclusion: By following these simple steps, users can efficiently pre-download basemap layers in the FarmLab mobile app, ensuring seamless navigation and sampling even in offline or low-connectivity environments.
